Additional Notes

Though the details of the Sandhya worship vary from community to community and also on the Veda to which the doer belongs, in essence it is basically same.

Sandhi means a junction, typically the conjunction of night and day, the time when there are neither stars nor sun (twilight) . Sandhya is a special devata that governs these parts of the day. Morning is called Gayatri, noon is Savitri, and Sarasvati. Gayatri is described as white-colored, having the gotra of sage Vishwamitra [Rigveda Samhita 3.62.10].

(1) Achamanam (Purification) : Reciting the (3+12) names of the Lord to purify oneself.

(2) விக்னேஶ்வர த்யானம்:
I meditate on Lord Vinayaka, who is dressed in white, the God of gods, has a white complexion like the moon, has four holy arms, and is gracious with a radiant face, for the removal of all obstaclesand for the success of my affairs.

(3) Pranayama (Breath Control): The main mantra (extended gayatri)

Om Earth, Om mid-world, Om Heaven Om the realm of wisdom, Om happiness world, Om the world of askesis, Om abode of Truth. Om may we meditate on the Adorable Light of that Divine Generator who energies our consciousness. It is denoted by pranava Om, which is water, light, flavour, ambrosia and also the three worlds. Refers to the seven worlds (or layers of consciousness) and purification of internal energy.

(4) ஸங்கல்பம்: Focusing the body and mind and making a commitment to complete a task (puja or prayer) without obstacles.

O Waters, you are the source of all happiness; Bestow on us the great strength, So that we may have the vision of the supreme. In that auspicious joy of yours, Make us participate in this very life, Like fond mothers (nourishing their children) . May we attain to that satisfactory state of consciousness, Which you are pleased to grant us. Endow on us the divine energies.

(6) மந்த்ராசமனம்: (ஸூர்யச்ச/அக்நிச்ச) மாமந்யுச்ச மந்யு பதயச்ச மந்யுக் ருதேப்ய: | பாபேப்யோ ரக்ஷந்தாம் | யத்ராத்ரியா பாப மகார்ஷம் | மநஸா வாசா ஹஸ்தாப்யாம் பத்ப்யாம் உதரேண சிஸ்நா | ராத்ரிஸ் ததவலும்பது | யத் கிஞ்ச துரிதம் மயி | இதமஹம் மாமம்ருத யோநௌ |ஸூர்யே ஜ்யோதிஷி ஜூஹோமி ஸ்வாஹா ||
May the sun or Fire, Manyu the goddess of anger, and the lord of Manyupati, protect me from the sins I have committed out of anger. May the goddess Ratri remove whatever sins I have committed during the night, whether with my body or mind and whatever other sins I may have. I perform the homam called Swaha in the fire of the sun, the one who gives salvation.

(7) Additional Verse for purification: ததிக்ரா விண்ணோ அகாரிஷம் | ஜிஷ்ணோ ரச்வஸ்ய வாஜிந: |ஸுரபிநோ முகாகராத் ப்ரண ஆயுகும்ஷி தாரிஷத் ||
I make obeisance to the Supreme Person who supports, rules and sustains all the worlds, who is ever victorious and who symbolises the Divine Pranic energy in the form of a horse (hayagriva) . May He make us fragrant with knowledge. May He protect our lives continuously.

(10) ஐக்யானு ஸந்தாநம்: அஸாவாதித்யோ ப்ரஹ்ம. ப்ரஹ்மைவ ஸத்யம் ப்ரஹ்மைவ அஹமஸ்மி
This Sun is the Supreme Reality (Brahman) , I am that Supreme Reality.

Brahma is the rishi of pranava Goddess gayatri is the metre. The deity or devata is the Supreme soul or paramatma.
For the seven planes bhuh etc, the rishis are Atri, Bhrgu, Kutsa, Vasishtha, Gautama, Kashyapa, Angirasa.
The metres are: gaayatri, ushnik, anushtup, brhati, pankti, trshtup, jagati.
The deities are: Agni, Vayu, Arka, Vagisha, Varuna, Indra, and the All-gods.

ஆயாத்வித்ய அநுவாகஸ்ய வாமதேவ ரிஷி: அநுஷ்டுப்ச் சந்த: காயத்ரீ தேவதா

For the Ayathu anuvaka, the rishi is Vamadeva. chhandas anushtup and the deity Gayatri.
Welcome the goddess Gayatri, who grants all desires to those who attain her, who is eternal, equal to Pranava, and who is the mother of all happiness, to come here. Accept my prayers, Mother of all vedas. O Gayatri, You are the power of the senses. You are strong and powerful to destroy our enemies. You are the radiance, that has won the favor of the gods. You are everything. You can give us long healthy-wealthy life. You are the one who rule over all of us. You are the one who removes all sins. I invoke such Gayatri in the form of Pranava. I invoke her as Savitri. I invoke her as Saraswati.
For the gayatri mantra, the rishi is Vishvamitra. chhandas nichrdgayatri and the deity Savita.

(15) ஓம் பூர்புவஸ்ஸுவ: || ஓம் தத் ஸவிதுர் வரேந்ஞம் பர்க்கோ தேவஸ்ய தீமஹீ | தியோ யோ ந: ப்ரசோதயாத் ||
Om, we become aware of the three planes in us. The three planes are the plane of physical matter bhuh, the plane of life-energies or prana called bhuvah and the plane of mental energies and the higher spiritual intelligence called svar or svah. Let us meditate and activate our thoughts towards wisdom. This is addressed to the deva savitr, the spiritual sun, the radiance issuing from the Supreme Source. Let that Light motivate and energise our thought-movements.

(16) உத்தமே சிகரே தேவி பூம்யாம் பர்வத மூர்த்தநி ப்ராஹ்மணேப்யோ அப்ஹ்யநுஜ்ஞானம் கச்ச தேவி யதாஸுகம்
O Radiant Goddess Gayatri, after blessing your devotees who are doing your japam, you can return who to the supreme peak the earth's and mountains (meru mountain where devi always resides). Please come, when brahmanas call you again.

I meditate on the glory and fame of the all-protecting Sun who is adorable, eternal, bewitching the hearts of all listeners.
The Sun guides all, knowing everything. He supports the earth and the sky. He watches all creation unwinkingly. To him we offer hymns endowed with clarity (or rice with ghee, for ritualists) for attaining eternal fruits.
O Sun who is Mitra, may he who longs to worship You scrupulously get the full benefit of righteousness.

May we see and adore for a hundred years the Sun whose orb rises in the east and who looks after the welfare of the celestials like an eye. May we live thus for a hundred years. May we rejoice with our kith and kin for a hundred years. May we live gloriously for a hundred years. May we speak sweetly for a hundred years. May we live for a hundred years undefeated by the forces of evil. We desire to enjoy gazing at the Sun for a hundred years. May my whole mind be sanctified by the Sun who bestows all our needs, whose eyes are red, who is omniscient and who rises from amidst the waters of the ocean illumining all the quarters.
Moving along the worlds of Truth duly establishing the immortal and the mortal, God Savitr comes in his golden car beholding the worlds.
Beholding a higher Light beyond this darkness, We have come to the highest Light, Surya, God among Gods. udutyam jatavedasam devam vahanti ketavah drshe vishvaya suryam The Rays bear upward the Divine, the all-knowing Sun so that all may behold him.
The wonderful face of the Gods has arisen, the eye of Mitra, Varuna and Agni; The Sun, the soul, atma, of all that moves and moves not, has filled the Heaven, the Earth and the mid-world.

(17-3) Evening:
இமம் மே வருணா ஸ்ருதி ஹவ மத்யாச ம்ருடய த்வாம வஸ்யுராசகே
தத்வாயாமி ப்ரஹ்மணா வந்தமாந: ததாசாஸ்தே யஜமாநோ ஹவிர்பி: அஹேடமாநோ வருணேஹ போதி உருஸகும்ஸ மாந: ஆயு: ப்ரமொஷி:
யச்சித்திதே விசோ யதா ப்ரதேவ வருணவ்ரதம் மிநீமஸி த்யவித்யவி யத்கிஞ்சேதம் வருண தைவ்யெ ஜநேபித்ரோஹம் மநுஷ்யாஸ் சராமஸி அசித்தீ யத்தவ தர்மா யுயோபிம மாநஸ்தஸ்மா தேநஸோ தேவரீஷ:
கிதவாஸோ யத்ரிரிபுர் நதீவி யத்வாகா ஸத்யம் உதயண வித்ம ஸர்வாதா விஷ்ய ஸிதிரெவ தேவதா || தேஸ்யாம வருணா ப்ரியாஸ:
O Varuna, please fulfill this prayer of mine and make me happy here and now. I pray for Thy protection.
I seek refuge in Thee uttering the Vedic mantras. The sacrificers seek Thee with the ingredients of offering.
O famous Varuna, please accept my prayer and don't ignore it. Please do not shorten my span of life. O Lord Varuna, please protect us without punishing us for sins committed by us in different ways—by omitting to perform daily Thy worship like the ignorant folk, by committing frauds on the celestials because of human ignorance or by infringing the path of righteousness laid down by you.
O Varuna, please expunge the sin like those attributed to me unjustly by wicked people like gamblers who go where the good do not go or the sins committed by me consciously or unconsciously. We must ever remain beloved of you.

(18) Salutations to Sandhya Devi, Savitri, Gayatri, and Saraswati. Forgive the sins caused by our desire and anger and and bless us. Salutations again and again.

(19) Abhivadanam is declaring one's Vedic lineage (Rishi) , or a formal greeting or an expression of gratitude to the teachers (Rishis) for imparting divine wisdom. It is customary to mention the name, gotra, pravara, dharmasutra (Kalpas) held and the Veda followed along with its sakha (recension) .

(21) யமாய நம: யமாய தர்மராஜாய ம்ருத்யவே ச அந்தகாயச வைவஸ்வதாய காலாய ஸர்வபூத க்ஷயாய ச || ஔதும்பராய தத்நாய நீலாய பரமேஷ்டிநே | வ்ருகோதராய சித்ராய சித்ரகுப்தாய வை நம:|| சித்ரகுப்தாய வை நம: ஒம் நம: இதி
Respects or Salutations to Yama (deity for Time or death). Yama is described by 14 names or deities, including Chitragupta (The One Who records Sins and Merits).

(22) ருதகும் ஸத்யம் பரம் ப்ரஹ்ம புருஷம் க்ரிஷ்ண பிங்களம் | ஊர்த்வரேதம் விரூபாக்ஷம் விஸ்வரூபாய வை நமோ நம: || விஸ்வரூபாய வை நமோ நம இதி
Supreme Brahman, the Absolute Reality, has assumedthe form of Harihara, who is the Soul of the universe or whose form is the universe. Let us worship that Supreme Being as the true essence that runs the world, the cosmic form, the one with the eyes of wisdom, and the one with the dark complexion.

(23) Suryanarayana Vandanam
Salutations to Sun God, arouser of the universe or the eye for the universe. You are the cause, creator, protector, destroyer or absorber of all. You Creating, Residing in the Creation, Leaving the Creation doubtlessly is the Atman. You are form of vedas or knowledge, having 3 forms brahma vishnu sankara.
You are seated in Padmasana in the centre of Surya mandala. You are the One to be thought/reflected/meditated upon. Described as deity wearing mahara earings; crown; having Conch; wheel of time or circular weapon; Club/Mace. Residing in Dwaraka (gate/hole of the Conch)
I surrender unto thee, Blossomed White Lotus, Penetrating, Eye/light who will protect me
Just as rain water falling from the sky (regardless of where it falls from or by what route it comes) eventually reaches the ocean. So, no matter which deity is worshipped, that worship will ultimately reach the One Supreme God (Parabrahmam or Kesava).

(24) காயேந வாசா மநஸேந்த்ரியைர் வா புத்யாத்மநா வா ப்ரக்ருதே: ஸ்வபாவாத் | கரோமி யத்யத் ஸகலம் ப்ரஸ்மை நாராயணாயேதி ஸமர்ப்பயாமி || ஓம் தத்ஸத் ப்ரஹ்மார்ப்பணமஸ்து
Samarpaṇam is done as complete surrender to Almighty is enshrined here. This can only calm our pride and instill humility. I offer my body, speech, mind, senses, intellect, essence, or outer and inner tendencies, to the supreme Narayaṇa.
