<P>Studied and worked at St. Josephs Trichy for 41 years as teacher. 1966-68 as relief teacher after retirement.Even after retirement, he used to teach and earn. In our culture, people are not evaluated for what they own but how they earned it and use it. The culture he was inculcated, simple and content life is the best. Working at Catholic school and still keeping his tradition and views, “We are good in our own way, others are also good too, so live your life with others”.

Teachers day

Appa's Teachers'memories (around his retirement in June 1966)

Rev.Fr. Miranda was head master and Rev.Fr. Arulnather arranged for teacher's training and appointed Appa as teacher (1925). Arulnather and Anthonysamy, helped Appa to do certificate/diploma course in Engineering.

Appas's school,classmates are: KP Haran (Ceylon Editor), Dr.NC (REC doctor during 1966), Devanugraham (IAS?), Ibrahim (SIET college Adviser), Subbaraman (lawyer) etc

Prof. Kunjithapatham, REC Trichy, was Appa's student and he likes appa alot. He introduced Appa to Prof. Mani Sundaram, to tutor his children. Prof. P. S. Mani Sundaram: 1950 Batch Civil Engineering, First Principal of the Regional Engineering College (NIT), Trichy. He was also the First Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University. When Mani Sundaram left Thillainagar, I went with appa for send off.
We used to meet Kunjithapatham often, and he will give us drop. He was a member of Rotary club and friend of another club member Dr. Maria Louis, EE Professor. He took us to club one day.

PR Sedurathnam was Teacher's coordinator during 1964-70. Dr.Sarvopalli Radhakrisnan was the president of India from 1962 to 1967. Radhakrishnan said that “Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be a privilege if 5th September is observed as Teachers Day”. The opinion of Dr. Radhakrishnan for the teachers was that the right kind of education could solve many ills of society and the country.

Dr. Radhakrishnan introduced Scholoarship for Teacher's children (Top 100 or so in SSLC). He said, Teachers are educating others and their children should not be left out.

PR Sedurathnam or PRS, made a speech during Retirement on behalf of teachers and the school. He told that Appa was a model teacher, as per Dr. Radhakrishnan's criteria. “A good teacher is like a candle, it consumes itself to light the way for other.” Appa has lighted a way for many teachers, doctors, engineers, lawyers and so on. Some of the teachers were his students. Pichumani (Maths teacher in St.Josephs) gave momento and garland and all. Appa thanked all with one word, "I shall be happy to be born as teacher in St.Joseph's again". Pichumani told this, when I went to say bye to teachers in 1972 before joining IIT. When I went again in 1983 for pension, Pichumani repeated this. Other teachers Lourduswamy, John (short), Arokiaswamy repeated the same.



PRS, Susainathan NCC and Fr.Thangadurai used to like Madhu. PRS helped to apply for Madhu's teachers scholarship in 1965. He was proud one of teachers's son can get it. PRS (good history teacher) told that Madhu is good and he should use this opportunity and study engg. later in 1969, he checked with department about arrears. Appa used to talk to PRS, Prof. Kunjithapatham and Pichumani (Maths teacher in St.Josephs), whenever he gets worried about Madhu's Enginneering course.


Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan served as the second president of India from 1962 to 1967. He was also the first vice president of India from 1952 to 1962. His philosophy is based upon idealism. Radhakrishnan emphasizes that education must be based on the twin principles of Truth & Love.
Radhakrishnan said, “Education to be complete, must be human, it must include not only training of intellect but refinement of the heart and discipline of the spirit.”. 

Professor Totadri Iyengar taught me Mathematics in St. Joseph's College, Trichy, and Professor Pandalai taught me Aeronautics in MIT, Chennai.

Good teachers can generate enlightened human beings with unique characteristics of moral value and professional capabilities. Teachers can induce the confidence and will power among the students for realizing their dreams. Every one of us in this planet creates the page in human history irrespective of who he/she is. Your experiences highlighted today are the dots in human history with life and light. This light, let it light many lamps.

The All India Association for Christian Higher Education (AIACHE) is a professional Association of above 500 Christian higher education institutions in India. It stands for character formation, value inculcation and co-operative skill training for a better altruistic society. Founded in 1967, AIACHE is a voluntary organization registered under the Societies Registration Act (1860).

AIACHE was founded at a historic meeting of the Principals of Christian colleges held at Madras Christian College, Tambaram, in January, 1967. Among its founding leaders were Rev. Fr. T.A. Mathias, Dr. Chandran Devanesan, Dr. Richard Dickinson, Dr. P.T. Chandy, Bishop Paulose Mar Gregorios and Archbishop Angelo Fernandes.

In 1919, Shri Rabindranath Tagore delivered a talk on ‘The Message of the Forest’ in the Lawley Hall.

In June 1921, Fr.S.Miranda SJ took over as the Headmaster.
On 23 January 1922, His Highness Maharaja of Cochin visited the St.Joseph’s.
In June 1923, Fr.J.M.Arulnather Sj became the Headmaster.
In June 1933, Fr.A.M.Antonysamy Sj officiated as the Headmaster.
In February 1945, Nobel Prize Laureate Sir C V Raman visited St. Joseph’s institutions.
In June 1952, Fr.M.Marianayagam SJ became the Headmaster.
In 1953, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Shri C.Rajagopalachari visited St. Joseph’s.
On 3 October 1956, Honourable Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, accompanied by K.Kamaraj and Indira Gandhi made a visit to St.Joseph’s.
In June 1959, Fr. Marianayagam SJ officiated as the Headmaster for the second time. English Medium sections were introduced in the school.

In 1989, Alumni Association for school students was inaugurated. The first Director of the Association was Fr.Joseph Lawrence SJ
On 20 December 2003, The Honourable President of India, Dr. A.P.J.Abdul Kalam flagged off the Jubilee celebrations by attending the inaugural ceremony.
