Brief on Islam
The word "islam" comes from the root words in Arabic which mean both "peace" and "to surrender." The word "muslim" means "one who surrenders." The word "islam" refers to the religion, whereas the word "muslim" refers to the people who embrace the religion of Islam.
Muhammad, Jesus, Moses, Abraham and Adam are the most important Prophets. In Islam, God is never depicted. Nor is it possible to describe God through references to the physical world. The three abrahmic religions all have a holy day of the week rese rved for prayer and rest. The Jewish Sabbath (Shabbat) extends from sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday. The Christian holy day is Sunday, and the Islamic holy day Friday.
The Pillars of Islam are five basic acts in Islam, considered obligatory for all Muslims. They are (1) the shahadah (creed), (2) daily prayers (salat), (3) almsgiving (zakah), (4) fasting during Ramadan and (5) the pilgrimage to Mecca (hajj) at least once in a lifetime. The Shahada or declaring belief in the oneness of God (tawhid) and the acceptance of Muhammad as God's prophet. There is no god but God. Muslims follows various prohibitions: no alcohol, no gambling, no eating of pork, and they are not permitted to charge interest for loans.
Islam followers are known as Muslims (Moslems). Islam means "submission to God. Muslims follows various prohibitions: no alcohol, no gambling, no eating of pork, and they are not permitted to charge interest for loans.
Prophet Muhammad was a preacher, merchant/trader, and statesman/leader. He was born in the year 570 in the town of Mecca, an important trading and religious center in the desert of western Arabia. His name derives from the Arabic verb hamada, meaning "to praise, to glorify." At the age of 25, he married 40 year old Khadijah bint Khuwaylid and received First Revelation 610CE. July 16, 622 AD is the first day of the Muslim calendar. This is the day when Prophet Muhammad moved from Mecca to Medina. On June 8, 632 he died there, after a brief illness and is buried in the mosque in Medina. Within a short period, Islam had spread from the remote corners of Arabia as far east as Indo-China and as far west as Morocco, France and Spain.
Early Arabs were pagan, and basically animistic. Moon, Sun, Stars, Planets, Animals, wells, trees, stones, caves, springs, and other natural objects, were their deities. Moon-worship was popular. Apollo and Diana the twin brother and sister, represented the sun and moon.
Islam in India
Arab sailors were trading with India long before Islam. Cheraman Perumal a king from Kerala went to meet the Prophet after he heard of him from the trader. Some say the king became a Muslim. Muhammed asked the king to build a mosque for the Muslims on his land. Though the king died on his way back, Malik Bin Deenar built the first Indian mosque, Cheraman Juma Masjid, in 629AD. The Keelakarai Jumma Masjid, built in 628–630 AD, with prominent Tamil architectural characteristics, is one of the oldest mosques in Tamil Nadu. So is the mosque near the Kottai (Fort) Railway station in Tiruchi which is dated 743 AD. Other oldone is Barwada Mosque in Ghogha, Gujarat.
Arabs were traders and merchants who inherited their dominant position in South and Southeast Asian trade. The Arab-Tamil-speaking traders brought much prosperity to India. Tamil literature speak about the maritime activities of the Arab-Tamils, where they are portrayed as shipbuilders, mariners, sailors, traders, pearl divers, pearl merchants, and salt manufacturers. The Chera, Chola, and Pandya rulers patronized them and the native rulers of Tamil Nadu and Kerala encouraged Arab traders to settle down in their lands. The Arab traders can marry a local woman. A link language called ‘Arabu Tamil’ (or Lisan al-Arwi ) was developed in Tamil Nadu. Some conversions happened over centuries through preaching by the Sufi saints who came from the Arab lands.
Tamil Muslims are not a homogeneous community. The early Muslims settled in the coastal towns of Tamil Nadu were called ‘Anjuvannam’ meaning assembly or congregation. Other prominent groups among them are the Marakkayars, Labbais, Rowthers, Sonaka Mapillas, Kayalars, and Thulukkar. Marakkayars- Marakkayars are boat people of Arab descent. They are a maritime trading community since the 7th century. They traded in pearls, rubies, and other precious stones. The 11th president of India A. P. J. Abdul Kalam was born in a Marakkayar family. Rowthers connected with the horse trade or were horse trainers or cavalrymen.
Muslim Sufis, writers and poets show a strong tendency to assimilate Hindu thought and practices. Ramananda Tulsidas, who wrote the Ramayana, and Kabir, who is revered equally by Hindus and Muslims. Guru Nanak, a founder of Sikhism, viewed Prophet Muhammad as an agent of the Hindu Brahman. Qwawalii (present day Qawwali) form of north Indian music much like the hindu bhajan.
Sufi Khwaja Hasan Nizami wrote that Ram and Krishna were the prophets of Allah. Hasrat Mohani, was a great admirer of Lord Krishna. The Sufis adopted the local rituals and customs. Certain Muslim communities like Khoja or Bohra community exhibit Indian customs and culture. Cults like Saibaba and Salim Chisti are respected by Muslims and Hindus. Saint Hazareth Saiyed Shahul Hameed Qadir Oli Ganjasavoy Andavar Avergal of NAGORE is respected by people of all religions around Tanjore or south India. Erumeli is famous for its Sastha Temple and Vavar Mosque. Pilgrims visit Vavar Mosque, as Vavar was considered to be a contemporary and friend of Aiyappan.
Muhammad Abdul Kadhar (1891-1959), wrote many Advaitic classics: Being conscious, Brahman pervades all; In forgetfulness Maya pervades all; In all that which becomes the all, is what I call the Union
Peer Mohammed Appa Dargah in Kanyakumari, was dedicated to a Sufi saint Peer Mohammed Sahib who was also a Tamil poet.
Islamic seer Paranjothi Mahan (1900-1981), lived a life with several Yogic practices, Manthras, Japas, Thapas and several other activities. Mahan received spiritual initiation from an old man. Mahan has established "World Peace Temple" at chennai. His samadhi is in Kansapuram, Madurai. Some of his preachings are:
- For the sake of reputation, do not enslave reason
- For the fear of pain, do not give up truth.
- A critical enquiry of half a minute is far superior to the worship of a thousand years.
- The duty of an ascetic life is to clear the sufferings of people.
- Sufferings are the ancestors of wisdom. Tolerance is the progency of wisdom. Pondering research and experiences are the allies of wisdom.
- Just as midnights and middays are momentary, crisis and miseries are but temporary.
- Those who are patient in all difficulties will gain strengh and power.
- There is no saintly life without family life, There is no family life without saintly life.
Science Trade etc.
There is much historical evidence to show that Arabs and Muslims interacted with India and Indians from the very early days of Islam. Arab traders transmitted the numeral system developed by Indians to the Middle East and Europe. Many Sanskrit books were translated into Arabic as early as the eighth century.
The word algebra is derived from the Arabic word meaning “reunion of broken parts”. Algebra was a unifying theory which allowed rational numbers, irrational numbers, geometrical magnitudes, etc., to all be treated as “algebraic objects”. The sword blades made in Damascus and Toledo were world famous. Craftsmen showed great skill at making wonderful ceramics, glassware, textiles, leather and articles made of silver, copper and bronze. Astronomical observation was begun in Baghdad.
Ibn Sina, known in the west as Avicenna, an Islamic scholar who composed Kitab Al-Shifa’ (“Book of Healing”), a vast philosophical and scientific encyclopedia, as well as the Canon of Medicine, one of the most famous books in the history of medicine. Caliphs encouraged a translation movement, a formal translation of scholarly works from Greek into Arabic.
Al-Kindi added the fifth string to the oud (an Arabic musical string instrument) and published fifteen treatises on music theory. Al-Farabi, wrote a book on music titled The Great Book of Music, and his pure Arabian tone system is still usedtoday.
